Shark Savers is working with the Misool Eco Resort and other tourism companies and NGOs to create a large Shark Sanctuary in Raja Ampat. One component of this effort is our petition in support of the Shark Sanctuary.

The purpose of the petition effort is to show broad international support for the Shark Sanctuary, particularly among the very people who are likely to visit Raja Ampat as a result.

To date, we have assembled the signatures of over 7,000 individuals, and over 250 NGOs and tourism companies from around the world. This is a great outpouring of attention and support.

Within the next few weeks, a formal proposal will be presented to members of the Raja Ampat government, including the Heads of the Raja Ampat Regency, Fisheries Department, and Tourism Department. In the meantime, the very important step of meeting with local tribal leaders throughout the region. This is being undertaken by the leadership of our partners, the Misool Eco Resort.

Our thanks go to our friends who worked with us to garner the company and NGO support of this petition. Katrien Vandevelde, Andy and Marit Miners, Mark and Terri Thorpe, Alex Buttigieg, and Colette Bastin contacted many of the Indonesian companies. Katrien Vandevelde also developed much of the list from all of the other countries. It's an impressive list!

We also thank all of the individuals and companies who have blogged about the petition, included it in their emails, and shared it with friends.
