| Myth: shark attacks are common |
|
Despite the media hype, the fact is that sharks do not target humans as the source of a good meal. Occasionally, sharks do mistake humans for their usual food or feel threatened and react to protect themselves, but such incidents are extremely rare.

In response to the previous post... Yes, shark attacks may be increasing, OR it may just be that humans are increasingly venturing into shark territory, OR it may just be that shark attacks are given more coverage in the news. Data regarding shark attacks from years before may not be reliable due to lack of reportage. It's just like saying there has been an increase in car accidents - it's because humans are increasingly using cars in their everyday lives, not because cars are becoming more inherently dangerous. All of it is due to changes in human behaviour and activity. |
