Perhaps you know that we kicked off an effort to raise funds for 1000 bus stop billboards at $100 each in China as part of the "Say 'no' to shark fin soup" campaign. The "Say 'no' to shark fin soup' campaign is a multi-media campaign that we are conducting with WildAid to convince the citizens of China to stop eating shark fin soup, the biggest cause of shark depletion in the world.

We sent out a newsletter on Tuesday night, November 17th, to our membership seeking donations of $100 or more. Each $100 enables us to buy a billboard for a full year in China. Each billboard features spokesperson Yao Ming, our champion on behalf of sharks. We have secured a matching grant from one of Shark Saver's sponsors, and so each $100 donation results in the purchase of two bus stop billboards for a full year. Read more about the campaign here.

Shark Savers committed to raising half of the funds, or $50,000, for this first 1000 billboards. As of now, just under 3 days later, we have raised over $15,000 through small online donations, to be matched $1 for $1 by our matching grant. That means we are 60% to our goal. That's very good news. We would love to beat our goal, as we can always put up more billboards. China is a very big country.

People are writing us to tell us how exciting they are finding this particular campaign. The ability for each of us to take an action that results in something very concrete--a billboard in China--with a message that has proven effectiveness in changing people's minds about shark fin soup, is a rare opportunity. We think with this message, fortified with such an influential personality such as Yao Ming, and leveraging the several years-long effort by WildAid in China, can bring us to a turning point. We have a shot at finally reversing the trend of increased consumption of shark fin soup and increased killing of sharks.

In December, the billboards, the web site we have created, and the television commercial featuring Yao Ming will all launch in China. Many millions of Chinese will see and hear the many reasons why shark fin soup is bad for them, the oceans, for sharks, and, potentially, for our future sea food supply. With your funding of one or more bus stop billboards, you can play a direct role in making this change. And if you are in or near New York City, come to our holiday party on December 2nd to see this campaign.

Billboard worldwide?
If possible, the billboard campaign should be spread to all the chinatowns worldwide (especially places like San Fran, NYC, Richmond in Vancouver, Sydney, Melbourne etc)!! Being a chinese myself (and a avid diver and shark lover), I know the hurdles it would take to try and change the mentality of the 'status' symbol and 'face' associated with eating shark fin. The more exposure and media coverage (especially from a high profile star like Yao Ming) the better......
It will take time, but we have to try! Save the sharks!

Yes, donate any amount you wish
Yes, people can and have been donating whatever they wish. There are two online methods to donate, and each include an open field where any number can be typed in.

Can you accept donations smaller than $100.00? I hope so as I cannot do the full $100.00 right now and I have been spreading word and asking people to send anything they can.

Shark Savers in Canada!
I think the buy a billboard campaign is genius! I would like to know how to get something like that started over here in Vancouver. I love chinese food but refuse to eat at a place that serves shark fin. So far I have only been to one place that doesn't serve it. So sad!
