New York was just one step away from protecting sharks last year. Now, thankfully, legislation has been reintroduced to help New York stop contributing to the tens of millions of sharks killed every year for their fins.

New York is one of the largest markets for shark fins outside Asia, with at least several dozen restaurants and banquet halls selling shark fin soup in New York City alone. We believe it to be the largest port of entry for shark fins on the East Coast, and a major supplier for shark fins sold in other states.

It's time for New York to join California, Washington, Oregon, Hawaii and Illinois in banning the sale, trade, distribution and possession of shark fins.

Please make a brief, polite phone call or write today to your state legislator to ask him or her to sponsor A.1769a/S.1711a to ban the shark fin trade.

Sample Short Text

"I'm calling to ask that Assembymember _____ sponsor bill A.1769a to ban the shark fin trade in New York State."

"I'm calling to ask that Senator _____ sponsor bill S.1711a to ban the shark fin trade in New York State."

I'm writing to urge you to sponsor A.1769a[Maisel] to ban the shark fin trade in New York. As many as 100 million sharks are killed each year, primarily for the demand for shark fins. This rampant overfishing is highly unsustainable and is having a devastating effect on the oceans because sharks play an important role as the marine apex predators.
