An art, film and ocean awareness gala event

artforsharks.jpgMiami Beach, FL – December 20, 2012 – Avant Gallery and Shark Savers are pleased to present Art for Sharks Sake, a breakthrough collaboration event for art, science and ocean awareness.

This gala fundraising event will take place on January 24th at Avant Gallery in Miami’s South Beach to raise awareness and funds for Shark Savers’ conservation efforts by featuring shark art and film while celebrating the artists who help protect sharks through artistic representation.

The evening will feature the work of artist Kevin McHugh who is renowned for his opulent shark and sailfish sculptures. Kevin is also a conservationist hoping to transform how people perceive trophy fish. Kevin’s artwork celebrates the beauty of sharks and sailfish while bringing attention to their dwindling populations.

A third of all shark species are threatened or near threatened with extinction with some shark populations depleted by as much as 90-99%. Shark conservation is vital to maintain healthy reef and ocean ecosystems. Florida tourism, local dive and travel commerce all depend on keeping this vital biodiversity. Shark Savers’ programs help shark populations at risk around the world.

tiger_shark.jpg“This event is meant to blend the line between art and conservation,” says Dmitry Prut, Avant Gallery’s President and Founder. “It’s important to play a part in community outreach, especially with nonprofits where we see a fit with our customers’ passions.”

There will also be a showing of Shark Savers’ short films with stunning visuals and engaging conservation messaging. The evening will include cocktails as well as activities with special sponsors, appearances by well-known shark biologists, conservationists and celebrities.

“We are thrilled that Avant Gallery has joined us to promote the concept that art is a rewarding and everlasting way to give back to the environment,” says Angela Smith from Shark Savers. “There is an age-old fascination with sharks, we plan to celebrate this at the event via the culture of the gallery and themes running throughout the evening. We’re looking forward to an amazing night that will heighten awareness for the sharks!”
