If you don't know it's happening, you can't do anything about it.

When someone first hears about the rapid destruction of a whole sub-class of animals--the sharks--and the implications for the oceans and mankind, they are often surprised and disturbed.

Sharks are getting wiped out. But nobody knows about it because this story is not being told and it's happening far away from us. Out in the oceans, far from shore, far from governmental protections.

The incredibly lucrative market for shark fins which is driving the slaughter is not discussed in the nightly business news. Chances are, our neighborhood restaurant does not feature shark fin soup.

We all talk and fret about global warming. But when do we hear that the ocean is by far the biggest absorber of carbon dioxide and producer of oxygen? We don't hear how the elimination of sharks might make the ocean stop being our best natural defense against global warming. Or produce less oxygen. Or how our favorite seafood might disappear as a side effect of the extinction of sharks.

And many people don't know if they should even care about sharks. Haven't the media taught us that sharks are mean-spirited and have an insatiable hunger for human flesh? Might it be a good thing if they disappear? Then comes the next surprise: sharks are rarely dangerous to man and are magnificent creatures. And, the oceans need them. We need them.

This is the story that Shark Savers has been created to tell. This story has a clock running. The sharks are already down to 10% of their former populations and the shark fin industry is aggressively hunting down what's left at the rate of 100 million sharks a year. So, we feel a sense of urgency.

Welcome to Shark Savers and our web site. We are a new organization, and this web site is just the start of an enthusiastic and energetic effort to raise awareness about sharks and provide a path for others to join. Together, let's save the sharks while we still can.

Please explore our site, get to know our plans, and join us.
