I'm wondering if anyone knows who I might send a letter to regarding the recent episode of "Survivor: Fans vs. Favorites" in which the "survivors" killed and ate a reef shark. They were shown devouring shark meat and exclaiming how tasty it was. I can't imagine what kind of damage this has done to the Shark Savers cause as millions of people watched this episode. I think it was terribly irresponsible for CBS to allow this activity on the show at all, but even worse to allow it to air. Thoughts? |

| I have done several shark dives with Jim Abernathy and feel interactions with sharks and other cetaceans are rewarding. I would be hard pressed to think of a more effective way to motivate people to protect them. | |

In the constitution it says that all men and women are created equal. Than I don't see why all CREATURES can't be created equal. We are all the same no matter what. So what if some creatures on our earth have fins and some have tails, so what if some live in water and some live on land? We are all equal! So I encourage all of you to stand up for what you believe in because to a lot of famous people to Martin Luther King Jr. to Rosa Parks we will be right there behind you! Thank You! |

The film, Sharkwater, has had a profound impact on me. Before watching the film, I had no particular interests in sharks, positive or negative. I think Sharkwater is probably one of the most beautiful films that I have seen, except for the senseless killings of these magnificent creatures. The scene where a giant shark, generally thought to be predatory and merciless towards people, allows Mr. Rob Stewart to hold and hug her on the ocean floor fascinates and amazes me. In extreme contrast, the image of us humans slashing their fins and throwing their bodies back into the ocean where they sink, alive and helpless, to the bottom of the sea to die is also forever ingrained in my mind. I feel absolutely abhorred and sick to my stomach. As a Chinese myself (although I have called Canada home for over 20 years), I know too well that Asians do consume a lot of shark fin soup and many of us are ignorant of these inhumane killings. Eating it would be no different from eating any kind of seafood or even meat for that matter. We would not know to think twice about it. Even though I rarely consumed the soup myself, I cannot help but feel my share of guilt and shame. I have made a personal commitment never to eat shark fin soup again. This film needs to be shown in Asia, particularly in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan to educate people in order to curb their demand for shark fins. This film was truly an eye-opener for me and I hope it will have the same effect on many more people, especially those who contribute directly or indirectly to these killings. Ever since watching Sharkwater, I had wanted to make a small contribution on my part to help save the sharks. I had researched on different organizations and although there were many reputable ones that I had come across, I needed an organization, preferably close to home in North America, which shares the same goal as mine to stop finning and illegal slaughtering of sharks. Your organization seems to fit the bill. Therefore, I am sending you a small token of my support to help with our common cause. I am also attaching a little poem that I had written to share my sentiments. Saving sharks will no doubt be a long and hard struggle. I wish your new organization success in your worthy endeavors. |

“Once you have cut down the last tree, poisoned the last river and killed the last fish you will realize that you cannot eat your money.” Old American Indian saying Surviving 400 million years long A magnificent creature, mighty and strong Monstrous mammoth with a bite A wrong we now must right Gracing a boundless ocean intense Possessing the proverbial sixth sense Policing the waters for our sake Her existence for granted we take Seeds of life for us she sows Playing the part of friend, not foe But how dare we ungrateful souls repay In a most horrendous, unspeakable way Becoming predators we resolve to kill For greed her blood we spill Rendered paralyzed without breath She suffers a slow and horrible death Profiting on ignorant and boastful deeds Senseless killings from voracious greed Soon to befall a domino effect Our very survival we will ultimately affect (November 15, 2007 |

Great website to an even greater cause. About your petition urging Alibaba.com to stop selling shark products, I personally believe it will have limited effect. The root cause is there's huge demand for shark fins because Asians (especially Chinese) had been placing (insensible) value on the stuff for thousands of years. (shark fins used to be served to ancient emperors only) The bigger problem is that the Chinese general public DOES NOT know about the shark finning and WHY it's harmful to the marine system. I believe, it's much more worthwhile to raise public awareness (in Asia) about the cause, rather than specially targeting an organization, because legally, Alibaba didn't do anything "wrong". It's like, as long as there's drug addicts, there'll be people selling smack. We need to prove & educate Asians about shark finning. I know being a Chinese, it's very difficult to change a culture of 1.3 billion strong. But I'm sure with relentless education and awareness targeting the youth, there is hope. If people don't know why killing sharks is bad, they won't change regardless of how many protests & boycotts there are. There's strong support to anti-shark finning practice in Western countries because Westerners don't eat the stuff! More must be done here, in Asia. Thanks |
