Shark Savers was founded in 2007 by a group of divers who care deeply about the environment and the oceans and sharks in particular. We think the need to increase awareness of sharks and the danger they are in is critical. And so, we started Shark Savers to save the sharks. As divers, we have personally witnessed the decline of the oceans and have seen sharks become increasingly rare. Sharks have become scarce even in their favorite refuges, such as Galapagos and Cocos, where predation by humans is supposed to be illegal. When our interest in sharks grew to the point where we wanted to do something, we realized that it wasn’t as easy as it should be. There are good resources and organizations about sharks. But we couldn't readily find a path to make a difference, a central place for easy-to-digest knowledge, or tools that we could use to spread the word ourselves. Protecting sharks may be a long, hard struggle, but finding a way just to begin shouldn't be challenging and cumbersome. And, there was no global movement that we could join that welcomed our participation, outside of accepting money. We thought there should be an organization that did all of these things. And so, Shark Savers was born. Shark Savers is a 501c3 public charity registered in New York.
