Deborah Smith Science Editor The Sydney Morning Herald August 16, 2008 DNA has been extracted from trophy shark jaws and teeth up to 40 years old, providing vital information about the genetic history of the endangered grey nurse sharks of eastern Australia. Sydney researchers used a hand drill to collect small amounts of material for analysis from old specimens donated by private collectors and museums. Adam Stow, a lecturer in biological sciences at Macquarie University, said grey nurse sharks were hunted extensively throughout the 1960s and '70s. |
