Predatory species rarely among 100 million inhabiting our region


With more than 100 million sharks inhabiting Atlantic Canada’s coastal waters, people might think twice before heading to the beach this summer.

But not to worry, says Steven Campana, who heads the Canadian Shark Research Laboratory at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography in Dartmouth.

The marine biologist said the three species of sharks — the bull, tiger and great white — that are responsible for 99 per cent of all attacks on humans around the world are either never found in Canadian waters or, if they do appear, "it’s incredibly rare."

"Canadians don’t realize that we have a lot of sharks in our waters," Mr. Campana said. "I guess shock would be one way of describing their reaction when they hear it."
