Shark boat operators dropping bait and chum into False Bay's waters have not made the feared and much-maligned animals any more likely to approach humans or boats, say top marine biologists.

In fact, sharks that were monitored by researchers in the False Bay area in 2007 stopped responding to chumming vessels after a short time, and in all but one case the sharks avoided approaching the boats.

This emerged at a landmark workshop hosted on Thursday by the Save Our Seas Foundation (SoSF) ahead of Thursday night's launch of a multipurpose shark centre in Kalk Bay.
