Finning is horrifically barbaric and wasteful. Ending the demand for the fins is the only way to end the practice. I applaud your vision and position of responsibility, and encourage you to enact this ban as soon as possible. Thank you.

Please support legislation to ban the sale of shark fins in Westchester County.  Sharks are being decimated for the sake of an unnecessary "food" item!  We must take into consideration, as well, the terrible and prolonged suffering imposed on these animals when their fins are hacked off and they are thrown alive back into the ocean. This insanity must come to an end - Westchester County is a good place to start. I might add also that as an ethical vegan, I believe that all sentient beings deserve to live their lives free of human domination and interference.

Up to 100,000,000 sharks are killed annually. Do the math! There is a serious problem here! We need to open people’s eyes. The word has to get out there & we need to make a bold statement about this to the average Janes & Joes of the world. I salute you for your effort.

PLEASE do what you can to enact the ban on shark fins. I am a scuba diver, and I wish to see sharks thrive. They are a necessary and beautiful part of our oceans.

309 David A. Sifre, Bronxville, Westchester County, NY, USA

There is nothing positive to be said for the barbaric and wasteful practice of finning. Driving animals to extinction and driving ecosystems to collapse, merely because it is profitable, must be outlawed.  Westchester County should be proud to be at the vanguard of legislation needed to preserve our oceans.

90 percent of the worlds population of sharks have been decimated - long lining and shark finning has killed more shark far faster than they can reproduce - FOR WHAT ... shark fin soup. 247 Clifton Michael Beard, Wimborne, Dorsett, UK

This is a great step in the right direction towards making shark finning as abhorrent to the general public as whale, rhino and tiger hunting.  It is a tragedy that the survival of this group of animals has been brought to the edge by a pointless and misguided fashion statement.  Thank goodness some people care. Regards, Cliff

246 Paul Horscraft, Sheffield, UK

If sharks were mammals these beautiful creatures would already be protected with a world-wide ban on all shark products. Unfortunately the populations of many shark species are now so depleted that it may already be too late to save them from extinction. Something has to be done now to prevent the loss of these wonderful apex predators. The knock-on effects of their loss to the eco-system would be catastrophic. Please act now before it is too late.

As top predators, sharks are vital to the ecological balance and overall health of our oceans. Unfortunately they grow and reproduce very slowly, so are extremely vulnerable to overfishing. As a diver, I am beginning to understand the negative impacts the declining shark population is bound to cause in the ocean, and subsequently on land for all of us.  It is crucial for fisheries and sharking finning organizations to understand that this is not an unlimited supply, and very soon, the supply will be completely depleted.  A worldwide enforcement is crucial to keep the population in check.  I hope other countries enact a worldwide organization to monitor and enforce regulations against shark finning.

In this area of Austalia, Shark-Fin Soup can be found at most Oriental eateries.   All the Shark Fins certainly are not obtained legally.   There appears to be no ruling stopping this practice of serving this as food.  Shark of every species is now under threat due to poaching and the demand for a ridiculous non-nourishing component in Oriental cuisine.   A total Ban must be imposed and more Govt. participation to put a halt to the use of shark and fins.

Please pass legislation banning the sale of shark fin products. Sharks evolved 400 million years ago, we could now lose some species in the next decade. (see the 2007 IUCN list) Finning makes use of only 2 to 5 percent of the animal, but shark fins are now one of the most highly valued marine commodities. A bowl of shark fin soup can sell for $100, so there is high incentive for fishermen to fin. There is no medicinal or nutritional value to shark's fin...in fact, quite the contrary, it has the highest mercury content of all seafood. Sharks are critical to the entire marine ecosystem: they are top predators and help to keep smaller sharks and rays from devouring other commercially important species of marine life. Sharks are critical to all life forms. Visit www.seafoodwatch.org to see the list of alternative sustainable seafood sources. This site will help you make seafood choices for healthy oceans & people!

Shark finning is a barbaric practice. It has to be stopped. What we need in general is more respect, if it is for other people, nations, religions and opinions. For all living creatures and nature in general. Individuals can take their own responsibility about potential health hazards as long as they are informed. I am more concerned about the destabilization of the shark populations, and therewith, the entire marine ecosystem. In addition, the practice of finning is among the most cruel and wasteful one can imagine. Finally, shark fin products are a luxury, not a necessity. Please set a much needed precedent with this ban. Within a single week’s time, over a million sharks will have be killed and China alone will build 3 new longliners for more finning. Within 3 years time, 250 million more "fin-addicts" will be wealthy enough to partake in shark fin soup. The math then gives us just 3 more years until the world's sharks are ALL functionally extinct. Over 400 million years of evolution erased in a few more years for this idiotic rubbery soup? That's beyond tragic.

This is critical legislation that would establish Westchester as a environmentally conscious county that cares about the future of our natural resources for future generations.

Thank you for considering this law to ban shark fin products. I hate to call for banning any product that may restrict someone's private pleasure, but nobody has the right to contribute to such a rapid and disastrous impact on the oceans by eliminating sharks.

It’s hard to believe in this day and age that there isn’t a ban on this already in the US!!! If everyone treated the planets oceans they way Japan does there would be nothing left for anyone to see or eat. Here is a link that shows some of the horrible things that are being done to our oceans everyday(http://www.cdnn.info/), and lists some of the countries that support these activities (The Dirty Dozen). Show your support and BOYCOT these countries (travel, products, and any way possible)!! It is through people like JASA (Jim Abernethy’s Scuba Adventures) that the oceans have a chance!!!!!
