About 10 per cent of all tested dried seafood samples contain impurities hazardous to human health.

Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food Yeoh Eng-kiong yesterday released the results of the tests in response to a question about an incident in December in which authorities in Foshan, Guangdong, seized a batch of shark's fins destined for Hong Kong.

The fins had been bleached with industrial strength hydrogen peroxide. Some of the bleached shark's fins had already been transported to Hong Kong for sale.

Industrial strength bleach, which contains hydrogen peroxide and a variety of impurities and heavy metals, are poisonous if repeatedly consumed.
